The Union Public Service
Commission (UPSC) examination is considered one of the toughest examinations in
India and is divided into three stages: Prelims, Mains and the Interview round.
The Prelims stage comprises two papers, General Studies Paper I and CSAT Paper
II. Introduced in 2011, the CSAT Paper is a qualifying paper that assesses a
candidate's aptitude and comprehension skills. However, despite being a
qualifying paper, it is essential to score well in this paper to ensure that
you meet the minimum requirement for the Prelims round.
The CSAT Paper comprises 80
questions that are marked at 200 marks. The paper has a time limit of 2 hours
and is subjected to negative marking. For every correct answer, 2.5 marks are
awarded, and for every incorrect answer, ⅓ rd of the total marks are deducted.
No marks are deducted for questions not attempted. The syllabus for the paper
comprises basic numeracy and data interpretation, comprehension,
decision-making and problem-solving questions, general mental ability,
interpersonal skills (including communication skills), and logical reasoning
including analytical prowess.
If you are nervous about your
English language skills, there are several ways to improve your language
proficiency. Firstly, it is crucial to cover your basics by following a good
English grammar book such as Wren O Martin or SP Bakshi. Expanding your
vocabulary and ensuring correct grammar usage is essential to understand a
given text or paragraph in the paper. Learning common idioms can also help you
fare well in your exams and expose you to new words. Studying newspapers, and English magazines or practising Queen's English can also come in handy in
clearing the CSAT paper. Reading will expose you to new words and help you to
expand your vocabulary. Additionally, using flashcards for vocabulary modules
can help you to improve your vocabulary.
For preparing Math and logical
questionnaires, it is recommended to go through the previous year's question
papers to gauge how in-depth you are required to cover each topic. Some of the
topics that require high priority are linear equations, number systems, profit
loss, ratio proportion, and speed-time-distance-work, among other topics. Some good
books that can aid preparation for the CSAT paper are Concise CSAT by Madhukar
Bhagat (TMH Publications), Cracking the CSAT Paper 2 (Arihant Publications), GS
Manual Paper-II by TMH, and Word Power by Normal Lewis.
It has been observed that
candidates often do not take the CSAT paper seriously. Despite being a
qualifying paper, if you do not score the required marks in the CSAT paper, you
may be highly disappointed in the final marks obtained. Before you start your
preparation, solving the previous year's questions to assess your strengths and
weaknesses is essential. Various manuals published by renowned publications can
come to your aid, and it is advised to give mock tests to assess your
preparation. With adequate preparation and determination, it will be absolutely
easy to ace the paper with flying colours.
In conclusion, the CSAT paper is
a qualifying paper in the Prelims round that assesses a candidate's aptitude
and comprehension skills. To clear the paper, it is essential to have a good
grasp of English language skills, expand your vocabulary and ensure correct
grammar usage. Additionally, going through the previous year's question papers
and taking mock tests will help you to assess your preparation and improve your
chances of scoring well in the paper. With adequate preparation and
determination, clearing the CSAT paper will become an achievable goal.
